MSc-Postgraduate Diploma-Postgraduate Certificate Mental Health (Primary Care)

  • Objectives Current policy initiatives are driving towards a new approach to Primary Mental Health Care services. Contemporary mental health services in Primary Care need an increasingly knowledgeable and flexible approach to managing mental health problems. This course is designed to achieve this by enabling Primary Care Graduate Mental Health Workers and other primary care practitioners to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute to enabling Primary Care to meet specifically Standards 2 and 3 of the National Service Framework (NSF) for Mental Health (1999), as well as contributing to the other standards and policy targets. Individuals with a health related degree or equivalent and, who are normally employed by Primary Care Trusts, are encouraged to apply.
  • Entry requirements Applicants are normally required to have a degree in a relevant subject or its equivalent and be working in Primary Mental Health Care settings. For applicants who do not have a degree, alternative qualifications and experiences will be considered on an individual basis. This will require an interview and may include some pre-course work.

    -Professional Practice: Caring for the Person with Mental Health Needs in Primary Care
    -Dissertation
    -Health and Social Care Research: Methods and Methodology

    Optional modules include

    -Dementia Care in Contemporary Society
    -Dual Diagnosis
    -Enhanced Practice in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
    -Leadership and Change

    Teaching and learning
    Teaching will include seminars, group discussions, self-directed learning and action learning as well as lectures.

    Assessment
    A variety of assessment techniques will be used depending on the module taken.
