Course descriptionThe programme will prepare you to undertake a specialist role as a practitioner in Community and Public Health Nursing and to obtain a qualification in one of the community nursing pathways, recorded or registered on the NMC Professional Register. (Specialist Community Public Health Nursing i.e. Health visiting, School Nursing or Occupational Health Nursing; District Nursing; General Practice Nursing; Community Mental Health; Community Learning Disability; and Community Children's Nursing). The course also enables you to gain an academic award up to Honours degree, or Postgraduate Diploma level in Community and Public Health Nursing through achieving an appropriate level of academic attainment.
Exemptions and Transferability
To obtain the Honours degree/Postgraduate Diploma in community and public health nursing, you must undertake substantial study utilising research skills and demonstrate a high level of academic ability. You will be able to obtain credit for previous study as appropriate.
Duration and Mode of Attendance
The duration of the programme is dependent on previous qualifications at time of entry to the programme. The minimum time for completion is one year and maximum time is five years. The specialist preparation component must be completed within two years.
Professional Recognition
Upon successful completion you will be eligible to register/record a specialist award with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Placement
Students undertaking a programme leading to a Specialist Community and Public Health Nursing qualification complete a minimum of 75 days of practice and are required to achieve specified clinical competencies and attributes. Each student has a Teacher Practitioner identified who will provide the support, guidance and facilitation necessary for the student to develop the competencies/attributes needed and assesses their achievement.
Structure and Content
Whilst on the programme you will undertake a range of modules which are relevant to your particular specialist pathway. This comprises three core modules: public health; health and social care governance and research and three more specialist focused modules. You will also undertake a minimum of 75 days of practice to permit you to attain the required specialist competencies and enable you to make the necessary links between theory and practic
