Course descriptionMSc: 18 months full-time
This is an innovative new programme offering you the opportunity to undertake an advanced study of various subjects relating to historical and contemporary developments in the economy, politics, culture and society of Russia and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The programme runs over 18 months with the first year (semesters 1 and 2) being spent at the University. In semester 3 (September to January) you will go abroad to study at one of our partner universities in Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Russia or Poland. During semester 4 (January to the end of April) you will undertake a dissertation either under the sole supervision of a lecturer at the University of Glasgow or under the joint supervision of lecturers from the University of Glasgow and a partner institution.
Language training is provided in a choice of Russian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Estonian, Latvian and possibly Hungarian, with teaching available both for beginners and for those with an existing knowledge of any of these languages. Language study is a compulsory component of the MSc degree.

Core courses include:
* State and society under communism: social and economic frameworks
* Thematic issues in Russian, Central and East European studies
* Language (Czech, Estonian, Latvian, Polish, Russian, Slovak and possibly Hungarian).
Optional courses offered at Glasgow include
* Changing state and society in Central Europe
* Economic transformation in Central East Europe
* Gender and identity in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia
* Post-Soviet Russia: renegotiating global and local identities
* Social transformation in Eastern Europe
* Society, environment and the concept of sustainable development in post-Soviet Russia
* Stalin and Stalinism
* Statehood and nationality in Central and Eastern Europe
* Research methods for studying Russia and Central and Eastern Europe
* Globalisation and the new security agenda in Central and Eastern Europe.
A wide range of optional courses focusing on Russia, Central and Eastern Europe will be available at our partner institutions in Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Russia and Poland. You will be able to choose from a range of courses focusing upon historical and contemporary developments in the region. All of these courses will be offered in English. Language tuition in a Russian/Central/East European language is also offered at the partner university in semester 3.
