ObjectivesThis programme provides an excellent basis for careers within multimedia communication industry including those that require software and hardware engineering. Graduates are able to go on to join a range of industrial sectors including defence, medicine, entertainment and telecommunications.
Entry requirements-Good Honours degree in a relevant discipline (computer science, mathematics, engineering) -Students without academic qualifications but with extensive industry experience will be considered on an individual basis.
The MSc Communications Engineering is designed to provide students
with a clear understanding of both the theory and implementation aspects of digital signal and image processing techniques, communication, and software and hardware engineering needed in multimedia communication. The programme covers both current and next generation multimedia communication systems.
Thus the course aims to provide:
-Practical training in the application of signal and image processing in multimedia communication systems
-A thorough knowledge of data networks and digital communications with emphasis on standards
-The fundamental principles and design constraints embodied in communication systems
-The opportunity for students to work on relevant industrial projects.
Modules include:
-Programming and Software Engineering
-Data Networks
-Telecommunication Systems
-Digital Signal Processing
-Digital Image Processing
-Multimedia Communications
-Mobile Wireless Communications
-Research Methods
-Individual Project.
Teaching/assessment
This is a modular course with each module consisting of contact teaching supplemented by a significant amount of guided self directed study. Each module is assessed using written and practical coursework, with some modules also being followed by a written examination.
