  • Entry requirements A work-based learning opportunity aimed at health and social care practitioners who wish to facilitate change.
  • Academic title MSc/PGDip/PGCert Advanced Practice (Health and Social Care)
  • Course description Key strategic reviews undertaken by the Greater Manchester Strategic Health Authority (now part of NHS North West) established a need to develop health and social care practitioners who are fit for award, fit for practice and fit for purpose at Advanced Practitioner level.

This inter-professional programme places work at the centre of learning.

-You’ll have access to the expertise and skills of a wide range of collaborators including non-medical consultants, advanced practitioners, medical practitioners and other guest lecturers who are at the cutting-edge of health and social care
-You can also draw on the expertise of professorial and research staff from various schools and research centres across the University
-You will be allocated a learning facilitator who will help you broker effective work-based placements which will enable you to meet the needs identified in your individual learning pathway.

    Course Content

-This 3 semester programme has two intakes each year, September and January and is delivered part-time over 2 years
-You will require 2 learning days per week for 45 weeks of the year. Thursday is the dedicated teaching day
-You will need to negotiate when you take the second day with your Trust and learning facilitator
-The full Masters programme consists of 7 modules and a dissertation:

    Year One

-Undertake a rigorous self assessment leading to the production of an individual learning pathway against national, local and Trust based competencies with Foundations of Advanced Practice (1)
-Investigating Resources for Knowledge Acquisition will help you build on your current knowledge and skills related to evidence and research to develop a rigorous approach to acquisition of knowledge for practice
-Foundations of Advanced Practice (2) introduces the theoretical basis underpinning the core characteristics of advanced practice relating to management, leadership, acquisition and application of higher level knowledge to practice, risk assessment, risk management and elements of service redesign
-Enhance your current knowledge and skills with Principles of Advanced Practice and work towards the development of core competencies and higher level skills needed for systematic, integrated patient/client assessment and examination
-Application of Sciences for Advanced Practice introduces you to life sciences (including, physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology) in support of your developing higher level skills in advanced practice
-Identify and develop specific higher level skills and knowledge required in order for you to function as an advanced practitioner upon completion of the programme with Independent Learning

    Year 2

-Contextualising Advanced Practice will guide you through work-based learning to enhance higher level skills and knowledge and take these to a deeper level to meet the specific needs arising from your client group/service need
-Importantly, this module includes time for you to consolidate knowledge and skills developed through the core modules while enabling you to identify and focus on specific knowledge and skills to meet the needs derived from service users in their own clinical arena. During this module you will begin to practice at advanced level and begin to manage care with supervision from your mentor/assessor.

Application of Advanced Practice - Dissertation. The exact focus for your project will be negotiated with your mentor and learning facilitator and will enable you to demonstrate autonomy in the critical appropriation, transfer and transformation of knowledge derived from diverse sources of evidence
