MSc-PGDip in Mobile and Satellite Communications

  • Objectives The MSc in Mobile and Satellite Communications aims to give students a thorough understanding of the engineering aspects of these extremely important and rapidly developing areas.
  • Entry requirements The programmes are intended for good honours graduates of mathematics, computing, physical sciences and engineering disciplines. Our normal entry level is a minimum of a Lower Second or equivalent; however, with industrial experience, we can be flexible in our entry requirements.
  • Academic title MSc/PGDip in Mobile and Satellite Communications
  • Course description Mobile and satellite-based communications have enabled widespread uptake of wireless communications, both for personal and business use. The two technologies complement each other, with mobile communications providing point-to-point services in densely populated areas, while satellite communications support broadcast services and also enable wireless communication in regions of the Earth where mobile networking infrastructure is not cost-effective. The future development of these technologies is expected to provide ubiquitous wireless communications and computing.

In the first semester, the programme gives a grounding in information representation and transmission, satellite communications technology, organisations and the market for satellite communications, and the engineering fundamentals of mobile and personal communications. This work is built on in the second semester with a number of optional modules covering areas such as spacecraft dynamics, RF systems and circuits, antennas and propagation, image and video compression, advanced satellite communications including IP-based networks and DVB, mobile phone operating systems, and data and Internet networking. As with all the Department's MSc programmes, a project and dissertation provides an opportunity to investigate one area in much greater detail.

Successful students graduating with this MSc programme can expect to find employment in companies such as mobile and communications satellite equipment manufacturers, mobile and satellite-based telecoms operators, and organisations with advanced networking infrastructures.

    Programme length
    12 months full-time, up to 48 months part-time
