ObjectivesThe MSc in Medical Imaging is aimed at training graduates for careers in this exciting multidisciplinary area and provides a judicious mix of theoretical and applied topics. Lectures, visits and summer dissertation projects are provided in association with a large number of expert clinical and industrial partners within the South East, including the Royal Marsden Hospital, GE Healthcare, Royal Surrey County Hospital and others.
Entry requirementsTypical entry requirements The programmes are intended for good honours graduates of mathematics, computing, physical sciences and engineering disciplines. Our normal entry level is a minimum of a Lower Second or equivalent; however, with industrial experience, we can be flexible in our entry requirements.

Course descriptionMedical imaging is a rapidly growing discipline within the healthcare sector, incorporating engineers, physicists, computer scientists and clinicians. This is fuelled by the rapid development of 3D medical imaging systems over the last few decades, matched by an exponential rise in computing power. This has allowed the development of new methods for the acquisition, reconstruction, processing and display of digital medical image data with unprecedented speed, resolution and contrast: a trend which can only continue.
The first two semesters prepare students for applied aspects of medical imaging and instrumentation, including planar X-ray imaging, tomographic imaging modalities (CT, MRI, PET and SPECT) and imaging in radiotherapy. Students also study a further advanced module to provide advanced skills aimed at 'next-generation' image analysis systems. To further support the applied aspect of the programme, students normally spend two weeks undertaking a hospital placement during the Easter vacation.
Students from the MSc can expect to find employment in the medical imaging industry or the public healthcare sector.
