  • Entry requirements These courses are for graduates already employed in a housing organisation, whether experienced in the profession or relatively new to the field. The course is validated by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) and successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma course after 2 years of part-time study will enable you to gain corporate membership (MCIH) of the organisation without further study. For the MSc in Housing Practice, you continue for a third year of part-time study. This vocational course will help you acquire the skills and knowledge to practice more effectively in the housing profession. Learning to link theory and research to housing practice will improve both your personal and professional skills. On registering for the course, you automatically become a student member of CIH with a range of associated benefits.

    In the first year you study modules in:

    -Housing, Society & Sustainability
    -Housing Policy in Context
    -Housing Core Services
    -Housing Businesses

    In the second year you study:

    -Housing Economic & Legal Framework
    -Managing Housing & Neighbourhood Services
    -Managing Housing Organisations
    -Professional Practice

    At this stage, you are qualified for corporate CIH membership, and you can choose to receive the Postgraduate Diploma, or continue for a further year and graduate with the MSc in Housing Practice. In that third year you take a module in Research Methods, and undertake a dissertation on a subject of your choice related to housing.

    Assessment
    The assessment strategy is designed to allow you to show your knowledge, understanding and ability through a variety of methods - essays, reports, presentations and research projects.

    Career progression
    From your experience of already being employed in Housing and from the two years of study leading to the Post- graduate Diploma, the Professional Qualification expectations of the Chartered Institute of Housing are achieved. At this point, you become eligible for Corporate Membership of the Institute: a valuable edge in the increasingly competitive work environment.
    Continuing and graduating with the MSc will further enhance both your knowledge and employment prospects in Housing and related fields such as regeneration.

    Entry Requirements

    An honours degree from a UK university or equivalent
    APL/APEL for those with appropriate experience

    Please ask if you are employed in this sector but do not have the above formal entry requirements. We welcome enquiries from people with relevant experience seeking accreditation of prior learning or experience.

    Duration

    The Postgraduate Diploma is studied over 2 years, and the MSc takes a further year (three years in all).
    Students attend one day a week.
