    There is a growing demand for professionals in media production who show a greater understanding of the needs of new media applications and the capabilities of creative technologies. This leading edge course is designed to deliver that crucial level of broad expertise for successful careers in media production. Students completing this course will gain highly sought after skills and knowledge, and be ideally placed to lead the exploitation of new creative technologies in new media.

    Programme

    The production of digital media has fast become one of the defining creative and intellectual challenges of the 21st century. The convergence of creative and media technologies has delivered a greater range of sophisticated, accessible and flexible media services to users. This course provides you with the opportunity to develop your skills in Media Production technologies to develop media that enhances the experience of your audience.

    Prior to commencement of the course you will be invited to an induction event where you will meet with teaching staff and fellow students, and familiarise yourself with the teaching and research facilities at De Montfort University.

    Your course will consist of four specialist area strands running over two semesters. Each strand is made up of two taught modules. Currently available strands are:

    Contextual Studies Strand (Compulsory) - Research Methods: design research, data collection and analysis. Critical Practice: critical and creative thinking, project management, evaluation of media production.
    Audio Strand - Audio Production: including in-depth audio processing, 5.1 production facilities, audio production for film, and audio on the web. Audio Systems: programming synthesisers/samplers/plugins, audio programming languages, max/msp, reactor, multimodal interface design.

    Video Strand - Video Production: high definition video production techniques - composition, sound and lighting, advanced HD video editing, 3D motion graphics, video compression - offline, online, mobile and HD video formats. Video Post-production: video and film compositing including computer generated imagery, special effects for video and film, rotoscoping, match motion, motion graphics and titling.

    Interactive and Fused Media Strand - Interactive Media: design & development cycle, modalities of human-machine interaction, sensory & interactive devices, and interactive applications. Fused Media: fused media design, real time production/broadcasting, virtual Studio, augment reality, sensors and context awareness, 3D computer animation technology/production, fused media applications.

    The programme runs over three semesters. The taught modules run over the first two semesters. During the third semester students demonstrate their learning by undertaking a substantial self-directed project leading to a dissertation.

    Teaching/assessment
    This is a modular course with each module consisting of contact teaching supplemented by a significant amount of guided self directed study. Each module is assessed using written and practical coursework, with some modules also being followed by a written examination.
