MSc Mechanical Engineering

  • Objectives The MSc in Mechanical Engineering has been designed to develop graduate engineers towards gaining chartered engineer status. It provides a range of modules that will enhance your depth of knowledge whilst developing management skills relevant to today’s rapidly changing industry. The programme is designed to broaden the technical and non-technical skills needed to succeed in this industry. The award is designed as a progression from undergraduate studies and will allow you to develop your analysis skills using appropriate analytical and computer based techniques. You will have access to state of the art engineering analysis software. An important aspect for employment of postgraduate engineers is the progression to managing projects and teams, these skills are addressed within the award. In addition, students are encouraged to develop awareness of wider issues that impinge on engineering such as environmental and safety. The dissertation allows you to research a specific engineering topic to illustrate your depth of knowledge, critical awareness, problem solving and communication skills. Modules on this award may be suitable for fulfilling academic requirements for students seeking Chartered Engineer status with professional bodies.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements: Entry will usually be via an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering although other related engineering discipline may be considered
  • Academic title MSc Mechanical Engineering
  • Course description Course Content

    The programme contains the following modules:

        * Advanced Mechanics
        * Finite Element Analysis
        * Computational Fluid Dynamics
        * Heat Transfer & Combustion
        * Monitoring & Control
        * Safety Engineering
        * Integrated Project Planning & Management
        * Carbon Management and Environmental Control
        * Dissertation

    The individual dissertation at Masters level will provide you with an understanding of the main methodological approach to research to enable you to critically analyse, evaluate and implement solutions to a selected topic. The research will be based on identifying, assessing, controlling and, where feasible, implementing solutions and improvements to live issues facing an organisation. The simple brief for the student is to solve a ‘real problem’. Students will have investigated the policies, procedures and planning of systems and have evaluated the validity and reliability of these systems. They will have written a comprehensive and constructive document which, being well executed, will investigate a problem thoroughly, report its findings and present its conclusions, which will lead to a set of prioritised recommendations for implementation in the short and long term

    How To Study

    Staff are active in research and/or consultancy, and bring to their lectures case studies and context to the subjects that are being studied. The course modules will primarily be delivered by means of lectures, with appropriate tutorials and practical laboratory work. Taught modules are assessed by either continually assessed coursework or by a mixture of coursework and exams. The dissertation has three elements of assessment: a thesis, a poster presentation and a viva voce.

    Career prospects

    There is an increasing demand for high-quality engineers with flexible postgraduate experience and a good range of transferable skills in the broad field of mechanical engineering. In this competitive industry this MSc will improve your career prospects. Graduates are likely to go on to occupy senior positions in the engineering industry and related sectors. Mechanical engineers gain work in areas as diverse as design, research and development, environmental engineering, numerical analysis, computer modelling, use of materials and control systems. As demand is high for skilled, innovative engineers the opportunities are abundant.
