MSc Management in Contemporary China

  • Objectives After almost thirty years of rapid economic growth and social development, China has become a powerful player in our global economy. In another thirty years, China may well become an economic, political and military superpower, providing huge opportunities and challenges to all. This course aims to equip you with the knowledge and understanding you need to see China in its international context, to exploit new opportunities as they arise and face any challenges. It is highly unusual in its multi-disciplinary form and content and has been devised to give you a special focus on management and business issues as they relate to contemporary China. You will also develop the theoretical and methodological skills necessary to carry out successful management studies in China or to progress as a PhD student.
  • Entry requirements This full-time taught Masters programme is ideally suited to students with a background in Management, Business, Economics or other general social science subjects and a strong interest in contemporary China. It is suitable for both the UK and non-UK students, including those from China.

    -This course offers you the exciting opportunity to spend a three-month internship in China, underlining your studies within the appropriate cultural and business context.
    -The School of Contemporary Chinese Studies houses the highly-regarded China Policy Institute, which is the UK’s only think-tank dedicated to the analysis of critical China policy, and to the expansion of knowledge about and understanding of contemporary China in Britain.

    Course Content
    This course will give you a special focus on management and business issues as they relate to contemporary China.

    The modules currently on offer include:

    -Management in China
    -Human Resource Management and Marketing for China
    -Contemporary Chinese Economic Issues
    -Research Design and Practice in China

    Please note that all module details are subject to change.

    The course will culminate in the completion of a 60-credit dissertation or three-month internship in China, which you will have to support with a 10,000-word report.

    Course Structure

    The MSc in Management in Contemporary China is taught on a full-time basis over one calendar year.

    Over the first two semesters, you will be required to take 120 credits’ worth of modules.

    The modules you take will link into Nottingham University Business School, as well as courses such as MSc Human Geography and Chinese Studies, and MA Chinese-English Translation, to give you the strongest possible suite of skills and critical insight into the issues affecting contemporary China.

    During the summer term, you will be expected to complete a 10,000-15,000 word dissertation (worth 60 credits).

    Alternatively, you have the exciting opportunity to complete a three-month internship in China and write a report of 10,000 words to support this.
