MSc Investment Banking & Finance

  • Objectives This programme offers training in the key areas of investment banking and financial investment. You will acquire an understanding of: * how financial markets operate, particularly in relation to the aims and operations of banking organisations and institutions; * decisions by monetary authorities; their implications for the availability of credit, future movement of interest rates, exchange rates; and their effect on economic and business activities.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Applicants for MSc programmes should have at least a 2.1 Honours degree, or equivalent non-UK degree. Normally, this should be a degree in economics or finance or a joint degree containing a significant amount of economics.
  • Academic title MSc Investment Banking & Finance
  • Course description We expect graduates from this programme to gain employment in financial institutions, government organisations and international organisations such as the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. The programme also provides a strong foundation for PhD research.

    Content

    You will take four compulsory courses and two elective courses. You will write a dissertation of between 12,000 – 15,000 words.

    The compulsory courses are
    •    Financial markets and portfolio analysis
    •    Monetary policy and the role of central banks
    •    Modern theory of banking and finance
    •    Financial institutions and markets in developing countries.

    You will choose TWO electives from the following list
    •    Financial derivatives
    •    Foreign direct investment and development
    •    Financial engineering
    •    Globalisation, trade and economic development
    •    International finance and money
    •    International trade
    •    IMF, world bank and economic growth
    •    Mathematical finance.
