MSc Inland Fisheries Management and Aquaculture

  • Objectives The above programme aims to provide skills necessary to manage change effectively in the exploitation of fisheries and other natural aquatic resources; increase understanding of the issues facing fisheries and aquatic resources worldwide; provide advanced skills necessary for research on or management of fisheries and aquatic resources; and prepare you for employment within regulatory bodies, environmental consultancies and applied research.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements:At least a second class honours degree (or equivalent) from a recognised university or college. Candidates with other qualifications and significant relevant experience, or an appropriate professional qualification will be considered and may be accepted on an individual basis. An English Language score of IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 550 is required for international students whose first language is not English.

  • Course description COURSE CONTENT
    You follow a taught programme of modules over two semesters from September to May – plus common supporting studies in computing and research training – to acquire a total of 120 credits towards the diploma qualification. Successful candidates can then complete a 60-credit research project leading to the award of an MSc.

    -Fisheries resource management
    -Inland fisheries management
    -Aquaculture planning and management
    -Coastal fisheries management
    -Fisheries development studies
    -Aquatic resource management and planning
    -Aquatic conservation and biodiversity

    ASSESSMENT
    Learning is through a series of lectures, seminars, field visits and course assignments. Assessment is by written examination and coursework, with assessment of a research dissertation for the award of MSc.

    The institute’s staff have a truly international outlook, with their expertise sought for projects around the world, including Europe, South and South East Asia, Africa, the Gulf, South America, the Caribbean and Australasia.

    HIFI’s research programme specialises in applied research, with emphasis on the scope for sustainable development, management and commercial developments.
