    The Moray House School of Education at the University of Edinburgh has been an international leader in special and inclusive education for over 40 years. We have extensive teaching, research and consultancy experience in schools and other settings, with specialist expertise in a wide range of areas such as inclusive education, social, emotional and behavioural difficulties, specific learning difficulties, deaf education, visual impairment and bilingual learners. Staff in the Inclusive and Special Education team are internationally respected for their research and publications, and are experienced and enthusiastic teachers.

    Learning Outcomes

    Students who follow this programme will be able to:

        * develop and appropriately apply knowledge skills and attitudes relevant to additional support for learning and the contexts in which it takes place;
        * reflect critically on the relationships between theory and practice and explore issues in the implementation of educational and social principles and ideals;
        * develop extended skills in research and enquiry, including the use of literature, reviewing evidence, gathering, organising and evaluating data, responding to evidence and providing critical comment.
        * engage with and where appropriate influence policy issues and the practice of professionals in relation to the delivery of inclusive and special education.

    How You Will Be Taught

    Students take core courses in Comparative Approaches to Inclusive and Special Education, Education for All (Additional Support for Learning) and Educational Enquiry (Research Training). In addition, students take three optional courses and write a dissertation on a topic of their choice.

    Programme contents

    As a student on the MSc in Inclusive and Special Education you will take the following core (compulsory) courses:

              o Comparative Approaches to Inclusive and Special Education
              o Education for All (Additional Support for Learning)
              o Educational Enquiry (Research Training)

    You will also write a dissertation on a topic of your choice. This is an exciting opportunity to undertake a small-scale piece of research, under the direction of a supervisor.

    In addition, you will take three optional courses, normally chosen from the wide range of courses offered within the programme area. By negotiation with the programme co-ordinator, and subject to availability, you may also choose one or more courses from those offered in the MSc in Education. Optional courses in special and inclusive education include:

              o Working Together
              o Helping Troubled Children
              o Deaf Studies
              o Audiology
              o Specific Learning Difficulties: Dyslexia
              o Inclusive Curriculum for Pupils & Students with Visual Impairment
              o The Developing Bilingual Learner
