Msc in Audiology

  • Objectives The ISVR Audiology Masters Programme is considered to be the premier such programme in the UK. We have trained and continue to train the majority of audiological scientists working in this country. The Programme also attracts many students from outside the UK wishing to undertake advanced training in audiology. It is extremely popular and competition for a place is high. The Programme is designed principally to meet the basic academic, clinical, research and vocational needs of Audiological Scientists. It will suit science or engineering graduates who wish to work in the health care sector but still use some of the knowledge acquired in their first degree. It also offers entry to a relatively new speciality with excellent long-term career prospects. There is currently a national and worldwide shortage of skilled audiology professionals and our graduates have been highly successful in obtaining suitable employment within the UK and around the world. The MSc Programme also provides a suitable initial training for research in audiology, and many of our graduates go on to complete PhDs. A Postgraduate Diploma Programme is available, which is similar to the MSc, but without the research project. NHS funding is available for a limited number of these places. A Postgraduate Certificate Programme is also available for those who wish to undertake taught modules, but not clinical practical training or the research project.
  • Entry requirements You should have a good degree in any of the physical, engineering, natural or behavioural sciences. Other qualifications such as HND, HNC, or HTEC with good grades (particularly in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurement) with a minimum of three years audiological experience may also be acceptable.
  • Academic title Postgraduate Diploma in Audiology
  • Course description The MSc Programme is intensive and consists of 12 months full-time study starting in early October each year. The content includes lecture courses, seminars and clinical practical training in diagnostic, rehabilitation and paediatric audiology. A particularly important additional component is a research project which leads to the presentation of a dissertation. Clinical training is provided in the Hearing and Balance Centre in the ISVR and at a number of NHS audiology departments in hospitals in the region.
