Course descriptionHeritage tourism is about travelling to see heritage sites such as castles, temples and monuments. Heritage tourism also covers the experience of being a visitor within everyday urban and rural landscapes. This programme explores how to develop this type of tourism and equips you to take on management roles within heritage attractions.
Sunderland is an excellent location to study heritage tourism. In addition to the rich variety of heritage sites within our region we also have strong links with the wider tourism industry through participation in EU development programmes.
The programme is designed to be relevant and flexible. You can opt for one module to be a work placement. We encourage you to engage with the tourism industry for your project work.

Teaching and Assessment
We use lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops to help you learn. We monitor your progress through essays, examinations, projects, student-led seminars and dissertations.
Work Experience
This 'hands-on' programme has been developed in close collaboration with industry consultants regionally, nationally and internationally. We've developed the programme in close collaboration with industry consultants. You can expect a focus on real-world learning with live project work, local day visits and guest speakers. There are two residential field study visits (at an additional cost) which will add to your existing practical experience.
We maintain strong links with the tourism industry in the North East and, through participation in EU tourism development programmes, with Europe.
Career Opportunities
Past students from our tourism programmes have gone on to a range of management careers including in attractions, museums and destination marketing. You may also choose to set up a tourist business or go on to research and lecturing.
