MSc Health Psychology

Objectives
Health Psychology is an area of rapidly growing interest among psychologists and other professionals working in the health service and in occupational health. This interest has been fuelled by the shifting emphasis in the provision of health care in the UK, by changes in organisation and mission of the NHS and by government initiatives such as Our Healthier Nation. Health psychologists can be involved in a range of activities within the NHS, ranging from providing psychological assessment and support in acute care situations to developments in the provision and management of psychological care and rehabilitation of people with chronic illnesses. Employment opportunities are available in the NHS and industry as well as in academic settings such as teaching and research. The Department of Psychology has particular strengths in teaching and research in the area of health psychology. The MSc in Health Psychology received a particularly positive re-accreditation from the British Psychological Society (BPS) in May 2005, with five commendations for: -being a forward and modern programme -the commitment and enthusiasm of the programme team -the range of assessments -the physical resources -student satisfaction The MSc provides Stage 1 training towards achieving Chartered Health Psychology status. In addition to coverage of the BPS core curriculum, the UWE programme has a particular emphasis on the acquisition of transferable practical and professional skills.
