MSc First Millennium Studies

  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements A very good first degree - at least 2:1 honours level, GPA 3.4 or equivalent - in a relevant discipline is normally required.
  • Academic title MSc First Millennium Studies
  • Course description Programme

    The programme follows in a long tradition of keen interest, from a number of different perspectives, in the achievement, fall and legacy of the Roman Empire and the rise of the Middle Ages. Its objective is to help candidates attain a level of expertise and knowledge that will enable them to embark upon independent historical research at an advanced level. It therefore offers opportunities for practical skills (especially language) training, seminar discussion in an interdisciplinary core course, and specialisation in aspects of the first millennium AD in Europe. The programme is sufficiently flexible to enable students to focus more on acquiring skills than on specialisation, and vice versa.

    Specialist courses are offered by several of the leading scholars in their fields, and across a range of historical interests spanning the first millennium AD. Late Antiquity is a particular strength, with primary foci being the Mediterranean basin, Britain and Ireland. The core courses are team-taught and focus upon methodologies and sources.

    Learning Outcomes

    Students who successfully complete the programme will demonstrate:

        * language skills (normally Latin or Greek);
        * advanced appreciation of scholarly methodology;
        * specialist understanding of normally two fields of study;
        * critical reading and discussion;
        * independent learning.

    How You Will Be Taught

    The programme combines practical work, seminar discussion and debate surrounding assigned reading, formal seminar presentations, directed and independent reading, formal written assignments and a substantial dissertation under expert supervision.
