MSc Financial Management

  • Objectives The MSc in Financial Management aims to develop reflective practitioners who are adept at analysing financial information, thus providing its graduates with critical skills which are highly sought-after in today’s competitive employment market. The programme is aimed at recent graduates with little or no work experience, and those who have been working and now wish to broaden their expertise and pursue advanced study. The programme content and structure have been designed to ensure that the MSc encapsulates current thinking and contemporary research. Students benefit from a programme which reflects the latest trends and industry requirements, laying particular emphasis on the needs of the employer.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements: An Honours degree or equivalent and a good command of English as evidenced by IELTS (6.0), TOEFL (213 for the computer-based test and 79 for the internet-based test) or previous study in English. (Candidates who do not meet the language requirements may take an English course at the University prior to starting their programme.) Other qualifications, together with work experience, may also be acceptable. We also offer a pre-Masters programme. Information about this is available from the Admissions Service.

  • Course description COURSE CONTENT
    Students on this programme are invited to consider financial management issues from the perspective of a manager within a business organisation who has special responsibility for managing its financial arrangements. This approach ensures that each issue is considered from a practical, real-world standpoint. The programme builds upon this by providing a firm grounding in the theory and practices of accounting and finance in the business sector, adopting an international perspective on financial management. Issues explored throughout the programme include strategic approaches to financial management practices, traditional and contemporary developments in financial management practice, and the theoretical underpinning of financial management. Students will also gain an understanding of how financial information can, and does, influence management decision making within outside organisations.

    FURTHER INFORMATION
    The programme is split into three semesters. The first two are teaching semesters and the third is spent working independently, with academic supervision, on the project or dissertation.

    ASSESSMENT
    Modules are assessed through a range of means, including coursework, examinations, presentations and group work, and all students complete a project or dissertation of 15,000–20,000 words.

    SPECIAL FEATURES
    Outside speakers further enhance the MSc programme and enliven modules by relating their real-world experiences to provoke fresh insights into business practice. Company visits also provide firsthand experience of the UK business environment, bringing theory to life.
