  • Objectives Pollution and the resultant contamination of land, water and biota poses a serious threat to our global environment. Pollution management encompasses all aspects of dealing with a pollution and contamination incident both past and present. Our environment is increasingly regulated and environmental scientists are being asked to ensure due diligence, corporate governances and assess such concepts as environmental sustainability and liability as well as to police regulatory frameworks and present environmental data within their context. There is a need for professionals who can design, execute and defend as expert witnesses legally robust environmental investigations and monitoring programmes. Developing these skills within environmental scientist’s is central to a new breed of environmental professional able to function in an increasingly regulated world. Modern environmental scientists need not only a sound grounding in science but also to understand regulatory and legal drivers which now control environmentl management. They need to be able to develop robust monitoring strategies and be able to synthesis the increasing volume of environmental information available. In addition they need to be able to communicate complex environmental issues to a range of stakeholders and operate at the interface between decision makers, scientists and the general public. The MSc in Environmental Practice: Pollution Management is ithe vanguard of producing this new breed of envionmental professional. The course caters for a range of professional aspirations. It provides a conversion for graduates with undergraduate degrees in science, geography, biology, or environmental science wishing to pursue careers in environmental management. The course can also be tailored to provide training for existing professional seeking to enhance their career prospects.
  • Entry requirements The MSc in Environmental Practice: Pollution Management is ideally suited to those with strong interpersonal skills and an Honours degree in a cognate discipline such as environmental science, geography, geology, biology, or marine sciences. However, entry is not just based on academic criteria as work experience and relevant professional qualifications are also considered. Mature students with appropriate experience are also considered and encouraged to apply

  • Course description Programme Content

    Participants undertake a 20 week taught programme, followed by a 6 week work-based placement in the UK or overseas with a relevant organisations. A personal research project, normally lasting 16 weeks is then undertaken to complete the course of study.

    Candidates unable to complete the full Masters course may be able to leave with an interim award, Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) or Post Graduate Diploma (PG Dip). Units within our Masters portfolio can also be taken under the University’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme. Students follow a prescribed list of units which normally include:

    -Pollution and Management
    -Environmental Skills, Tools and Techniques
    -Environmental Law, Governance and Corporate
    -Responsibility
    -Environmental Management and Risk Assessment
    -Environmental Consultancy and Professional Practice (Incl 6-week Placement)
    -Readings in Pollution Management
    -Research Project
