MSc Environmental Practice: Marine & Coastal Management

  • Objectives Coasts are incredibly diverse, resource rich and beautiful environments. Yet at present, they face an unprecedented suite of challenges. These include sea-level rise, flooding, extreme storm events, accelerated erosion, pollution, intense human development, recreation and resource exploitation. Coastal environments are also exceptionally hazardous as the Asian Tsunami and flooding of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina have demonstrated. As pressures on coastal zones intensify so does the need for skilled professionals in coastal management who can address these challenges. Increasingly, such professionals need to possess a wide range of skills, including: an understanding of coastal processes, hazard management, counter-pollution measures, strategic management, spatial information systems and regulatory frameworks, as well as knowledge of coastal management principles. They must also be able communicate effectively at all levels with a range of different stakeholders, from government agencies and professional bodies to local interest groups and members of the public
  • Entry requirements The MSc in Environmental Practice: Marine & Coastal Management is ideally suited to those with strong interpersonal skills and an Honours degree in a cognate discipline such as environmental science, geography, geology, biology, or marine sciences.
