MSc Environmental Management

  • Objectives sustainable living. Interdisciplinary understanding of environmental issues and their management in the context of sustainability lies at the core of this Masters programme, which draws on a range of expertise in conceptual and applied approaches from the natural, physical and social sciences.

    The modules offered on this course will allow you to develop skills in the collection, processing and analysis of environmental data; the use of data in the development and evaluation of policy; and a sound practical training in techniques of environmental management.

    The courses build upon the depth of expertise in environmental management found throughout the University, including the Schools of Biology; Biosciences; Nottingham University Business School; Chemical, Environmental and Mining Engineering; Civil Engineering; Economics; History; Law; Politics; and Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering.

    -This is a vocationally orientated route through environmental management and, as such, it is not funded through the Economic and Social Research Council.  However, we offer a research training route that is eligible for ESRC funding.
    -The School of Geography is one of the strongest both nationally and internationally – this is reflected in its position in the UK’s top five geography departments in The Times Good University Guide.
    -The School was rated 5 in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise and ‘excellent’ in the HEFCE assessment of teaching provision.
    -This is a highly collaborative course that is able to draw on modules offered and research taking place in many of the Schools across the University

    Course Content

    This course provides a foundation in the science and social science of environmental management and encourages an interdisciplinary approach to environmental issues at local, national and international levels. 

    These themes are combined with a sound practical training in environmental management.

    The taught elements of the MSc / MA in Environmental Management consist of a number of compulsory core modules, as well as a series of optional elements. 

    The core modules are:

    Semester 1

    -Foundations of Environmental Management
    -Frameworks for Environmental Management
    -Project Management and Environmental Legislation
    -Research Methods
    -Tutorials

    Semester 2

    -Approaches to Environmental Management
    -Tutorials
    -Dissertation Proposal
    -Research Methods

    In addition, you will be able to choose up to 40 credits of optional modules from a series of pathways, including:

    -Business and the Environment
    -Landscape Ecology, Conservation and Wildlife Management
    -Pollution and Waste
    -Environmental Assessment and Site Investigation
    -Law and Policy

    Having completed the taught components of the course in the autumn and spring semesters, you will be required to write a 60-credit dissertation on a subject of your choice related to Environmental Management.

    Course Structure
     
    The MSc /MA in Environmental Management can be completed during one year of full-time study, or over two years, part-time. 

    You will need to complete a total of 180 credits to pass the course.  This includes 120-credits' worth of compulsory and optional modules (as listed above), as well as a 60-credit dissertation.

    The dissertation is an extensive piece of independent research in a subject of your choice.  You will benefit from the support of a dedicated project supervisor, as well as the generic research skills training offered by the University’s Graduate School.

    As you will notice, this course is offered as an MSc or MA.  In fact, all the core modules studied are identical and the choice of an MSc or MA registration depends on your undergraduate qualification and optional modules selected.

    We also offer a Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Management, as well as a research training route approved by the Economic and Social Research Council
