Course description
Programme
This programme offers an intensive course in key aspects of the linguistics of English for those who have not had the opportunity for such in-depth study before. The programme focuses initially on the structure of English, and also offers option courses on aspects of the history of English, on current varieties of the language and on a good number of approaches to the study of the language and English linguistics. Students can also choose option courses from a wide range of other areas of linguistic study. The MSc can function either as a stand-alone masters qualification or as a basis for further postgraduate study (typically at PhD level).
How You Will Be Taught
The core courses (on English Phonology, Syntax and Semantics, and on Issues in Language Research) are typically taught in small groups, meeting several times a week. Option courses are shared with students on other programmes and teaching is done through a combination of lectures, tutorial sessions and written assignments. Dissertation supervision takes place on a one-to-one basis, offering expert individual tuition and the chance to undertake a small research project in the area of the student's choice
