  • Course description Ecotourism focuses on harmonising the needs of the environment and people within the area to be visited. It is one of the fastest growing sectors of the tourism industry and it raises vital questions. What can be classed as ecotourism? What characteristics should it embrace? How can it be developed as a potential economic force?

    The programme is designed to be relevant and flexible. You can opt for one module to be a work placement. We also encourage you to engage with the tourism industry for your project work.

    Course Content

    Stage 1
    Postgraduate Certificate(PgC)

        * International Tourism Development
        * Tourism Development Theory and Methods

    Stage 2
    Postgraduate Diploma (PgD)
    As for Certificate plus

        * Tourism and Natural Heritage
        * Experiential Marketing for Tourism or
        * Heritage Tourism Development Fieldwork or
        * Mediatised Tourism Landscapes or
        * Tourism Development Independent Study

    Stage 3
    Masters (MSc)
    As for Diploma plus

        * Ecotourism Development Dissertation

    Teaching and Assessment

    We use lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops to help you learn. We monitor your progress through essays, examinations, projects, student-led seminars and dissertations.

    Work Experience

    You will gain real-world experience through residential field visits. In the past these have included Paris, Barcelona, Prague and Dublin. You'll also benefit from the sharing of experiences by guest speakers from the tourism industry.

    If you are aspiring to a career in the tourism industry, specialising in ecotourism, this Masters programme will give you a real edge. You will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to operate successfully in a variety of environments.

    Past students from our tourism programmes have gone on to a range of management careers including in museums, attractions and destination marketing. You may also choose to set up an ecotourist business or go on to research and lecturing
