About the course
The course is solidly grounded in economics since it is developments in this discipline which have revolutionised the way finance and financial markets are now analysed. It is designed to provide the knowledge and skills that will enhance your employability as a graduate in the specialist finance sector.
Assessment
A variety of assessment methods are used throughout the course to develop and assess specific knowledge and skills. These include tests, essays, individual and group projects, reports and presentations. You will also complete an individual research project.
Course content
The content of the course is framed around important contemporary themes of: Information; Economic and Financial Modelling; Macroeconomic Indicators Financial Risk and Management Employability. You will study elements of each theme through the six core modules, and are then able to pursue one or two key themes through your choice option modules.
Employability and careers: life after university
Graduates of this course can work in the finance sector in careers relating to pensions analysis, unit and investment trust management, corporate finance, international finance and central banking. Graduates can also pursue academic research in the UK or elsewhere.
How do you study?
The modules are taught sequentially with intensive block teaching over the course of a week followed by a period of independent study, including assignment preparation and completion.
A range of teaching and learning methods are used in the intensive block teaching period depending on the module being studied. These methods include large group teaching, small group tutorials, research supervision, interactive teaching, industry-specific workshops (involving guest speakers, project work, etc.), eSupported learning, guided and directed individual and group study and a variety of multimedia approaches.
You will also undertake independent and group-based learning outside of the classroom. This will take the form of background reading, research, assignment preparation and assignment completion. Independent learning is guided by individual or group meetings with tutors to enable more personal support and feedback.
Inductions
The induction programme at the start of the course introduces you to the staff, outlines the course, and provides you with the opportunity to explore the various available learning and support resources, including the Library, Careers Service, International Office and Student Support Services. Additional language support will be provided as appropriate during the course to aid your learning.
