ObjectivesThe course is designed for both part-time and full-time study and provides a number of optional routes which lead to IBMS (Institute of Biomedical Science)-accredited awards for those currently in, or planning a career in, the Medical Laboratory profession Recognising the diverse demands now being placed on biomedical laboratory staff, the course offers you the opportunity to address developing areas of biomedical science common to all associated disciplines, including recent advances in genetics and immunology, and to equip yourself with the research skills necessary to complement your clinical laboratory responsibilities The route options are: MSc Biomedical Science (generic route); MSc Biomedical Science (Cellular Pathology); MSc Biomedical Science (Clinical Biochemistry); MSc Biomedical Science (Haematology); MSc Biomedical Science (Medical Microbiology) To achieve the award of Doctor of Biomedical Science, you will need to combine the taught components of this Masters programme with an analytical appraisal of your continuing practice, as well as the submission of a major research project - the project may be undertaken in the workplace laboratory, or with one of the active Biomedical Science research groups in the Research Institute in Healthcare Science (RIHS) Part-time students study core (and most optional) modules on one full day of the week, minimising the time away from work
Entry requirementsNormally, you should have a minimum 2:2 Honours degree or equivalent – substantial professional experience may be acceptable when combined with another qualification We look for graduates with an appropriate Honours degree in biomedical subjects, or biological subjects with an appropriate biomedical content You should also have a good standard of written and spoken English (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent)

The full-time MSc Biomedical Science route is attractive if you are seeking an academic research career and/or wish to make yourself highly employable as a biomedical scientist in a hospital or similar laboratory or in the pharmaceutical industry
Many former MSc graduates have gone on to undertake PhDs in prestigious university laboratories in the UK and abroad; others have moved into employment as medical or forensic laboratory scientists
The part-time route (also available as specialist routes in Medical Microbiology, Clinical Biochemistry, Cellular Pathology or Haematology) is designed for students in full-time employment in biomedical laboratories who are allowed day-release by their employers to improve their professional knowledge, skills and career development
