Introducing the degree
A key assumption of international political economy is that economic issues can exert considerable influence upon political decisions and vice versa. In a complex globalising and regionalising world, the arbitrary separation of one discipline from the other is no longer tenable. An inter-disciplinary approach is needed. Equally, it is no longer possible to separate arbitrarily one region of the world from the other. The reconfiguration of the way we think of the world in terms of space is an important step to take in order to understand the current period of transition. As a result, scholars have recently begun to focus on the examination of regions. All regions need to be understood on their own terms, not just in relation to the Euro-American world. Thus, understanding must come from the use of the theoretical tools of political economy, and also from a deep cultural and linguistic knowledge of the region. It is in this light that this programme will focus upon the major aspects of interaction at a number of levels within the East Asian political economy.
