Course description
Programme
The programme takes an original interdisciplinary approach to the study of contemporary culture and cultural theory, placing an emphasis on the issues of identity and representation in relation to cultural forms and practices. Concerned with the social and political conditions in which cultural expressions take place, especially the global and local processes of transformation and contestation, the programme offers a unique focus on the diverse manifestations of visual culture.
Learning Outcomes
Students will:
* gain competence in key themes and theories framing cultural studies within the global context of the discipline;
* learn to draw links between different cultural and linguistic traditions;
* acquire skills for researching interrelationships between social, cultural and aesthetic phenomena;
* acquire a critical appreciation of current cultural developments;
* gain critical, analytical and interpretative skills that are transferable to both academic and other professional settings.
How You Will Be Taught
The programme combines seminar and tutorial work with group discussions, class presentations, essays and longer research projects (dissertations). Practice-based projects and fieldwork will also be encouraged. Students will be directed towards public lectures, seminars, film screenings and events hosted by the University and other cultural institutions within the city
