  • Objectives The core modules have been designed to enable you to develop in-depth knowledge in a flexible field of study whilst the optional module offers greater flexibility and scope.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements Practitioners wishing to register for the MSc Contemporary Health and Social Care would normally have as a minimum, a lower second class honours degree in health or social care related subject. Accreditation for Prior Learning (APEL) is available within the programme where you can provide evidence demonstrating matching learning outcomes from previous courses/experience to this programme. The AP(E)L process is seen as a means of widening access by recognising and accrediting experiential learning which has occurred in the workplace. If you have undertaken Level 7 module study within the past five years prior to your application, then you should discuss your options with one of the pathway coordinators.

  • Course description What will I study?

    You must achieve 180 credits at level 7 in order to gain the award, you may however, wish to exit with a postgraduate certificate (60 credits) after successfully completing the first year of a postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) after successfully completing both the first and second year.

    Modules can also be taken as stand alone and not part of the MSc award. Students who have taken this route can use the module credits towards the award of MSc as long as they do so within five years of the credits being awarded.

    How will I study?

    Diverse teaching and learning strategies will be used, ranging from individual personal teacher contact to supported online learning, small group work to teacher led lectures.

    The teaching and learning strategies recognise that participants are studying at Masters level and should therefore be able to demonstrate self-direction and take personal responsibility for the advancement of their knowledge.

    However, to facilitate sharing of knowledge and peer support, action learning sets, workshops, seminars and critical debates will be facilitated to provide a framework to underpin independent learning.

    How will I be assessed?

    A variety of assessment strategies including negotiated assignments, portfolios, seminars, presentations and work based learning projects are utilised on the programme.

    The MSc comprises four named pathways:

        * Generic Route
        * Public Health
        * Management and Leadership
        * Community Clinical Practice

    The Public Health pathway also includes:

        * HEA 9080 Application of Epidemiology in Public Health Practice
        * HEA 9061 Contemporary Issues in Public Health

    The Management and Leadership pathway also includes:

        * HEA 9083 Leadership within Health and Social Care
        * HEA 9090 Managing in Health and Social Care Settings

    The Community Clinical Practice pathway also includes:

        * HEA 9019 Health Promotion and Therapeutic Interventions in Primary Care
        * HEA 9022 Leading the Management of Risk in Primary Care Settings
