    This programme offers a unique and extremely flexible programme to students wishing to take an advanced course in modern economic history. It equips you with a broad historical and applied perspective on the contemporary economic scene, and with the skills and expertise necessary to undertake further research in this field.

    A wide range of geographical and thematic topics is available within the programme to enable you to opt for a broad or more focused course of study. For example, it would be possible to specialise in the international economy, business history or economic policy in Europe. The programme is recognised by the Economic & Social Research Council as providing appropriate research training for a subsequent PhD and scholarships are available for this programme.

    Content

    You will study four core courses

        * Economic growth in the 20th century
        * Social science statistics
        * Qualitative methods
        * Research resources and skills in history.

    Two research courses are chosen from

        * International economic relations since 1945
        * China in the international economy
        * Economic history of East Asia and Japan since 1945
        * European integration since 1945
        * British economic policy since 1945
        * Economic development of Germany    1949-1989
        * USA since 1929
        * Big business and innovation
        * Banking history
        * Scotland since 1919
        * Business history.

    Dissertation of 12-15,000 words.
