MSc Community Health

  • Objectives The MSc in Community Health aims to equip you for a wide range of careers that have developed in line with current national and international government health legislation and policy directed by the Public Health Agenda, primary healthcare and health research areas. In relation to these changes, there have been developments in many areas within public health, and multi-agency partners have created many job opportunities in line with government initiatives to address health improvement, health inequalities, changing health behaviour and public health needs. This has given rise to increased employment opportunities in areas such as changing health behaviour, addressing public health issues, children's centre, health development/promotion, health needs assessment and in primary health care teams (PCTs).

  • Course description If you are interested in 'Community Health' then this unique programme will give you the opportunity to study important contemporary health and community issues. Whether you are already a healthcare professional or a recent graduate in a health-related subject, this programme will develop your knowledge and understanding in community and public health. By exploring the nature and impact of health policies, you will gain an appreciation of the interaction of health-seeking behaviours and health inequalities.

    This programme is currently delivered on campus and is being developed for additional off-campus open learning delivery. Learning strategies are designed to be innovative and flexible and are built upon existing practices within the University.

    As such, there are a variety of different delivery modes that address different learning styles and support and encourage active student participation. These include lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, student directed learning and e-learning, for example, with use of the virtual learning environment - WebCT Vista.

    Assessment throughout the programme uses a diverse range of methods that are appropriate to the learning outcomes of the modules. The aim is to motivate learners by developing skills in written coursework, projects, poster and oral presentations, time constrained tests, and seen and unseen examinations.

    Work Experience

    Specialist lectures will be provided by professional/external links from a variety of community health areas, such as primary health care teams, public health units, drug and alcohol settings, health development units,
    and health and social care settings.

    You will analyse the government's agenda and its practical implications for community health. Additionally, you will have an opportunity to study an area of health care in depth through a project.
