MSc Classics

Objectives This programme aims to introduce students of Ancient History, Classical Archaeology/Art and the Languages (Greek and Latin) to an advanced study of Classical Civilisation/Culture. It takes advantage of the wide-ranging and complementary expertise of members of staff in Classics in order to provide an interdisciplinary curriculum.

A very good first degree – at least UK 2:1 honours level, GPA 3.4 or equivalent – in History or a related discipline is normally required.

Course description All students have the chance to hear distinguished international speakers at the Classics Research Seminar every week during term, and can present their research in the friendly environment of the Classics Postgraduate Seminar. The 15 members of the Classics subject area at Edinburgh profess an exceptionally wide range of expertise in Greek and Latin literature, ancient philosophy, ancient history, and classical art and archaeology. The unit has particular strengths in material culture, Hellenistic culture and Late Antiquity.

Learning Outcomes

Students who follow this programme will gain:

    * advanced knowledge of the archaeology/art and history of specific regions and periods of classical civilisation;
    * an opportunity to study and analyse the literary significance of Greek and Latin texts and develop knowledge of current interpretation of them;
    * an ability to comment in a detailed manner on passages from a selection of Greek and Latin;
    * a developed knowledge of the Greek or Latin languages.

How You Will Be Taught

The modular structure of the MSc in Classics (Taught) allows you to concentrate on areas of particular interest but will still provide breadth of coverage. Students take training courses in general postgraduate skills and in Classical methodologies which help prepare them to pursue their own particular interests when researching their dissertation. It will be possible to study the ancient languages at beginners' or more advanced level.

The MSc by Research in Classics provides a firm grounding in the methods and techniques of research while at the same time allowing students to pursue their own research with the guidance of expert supervisors.
