MSc Chinese-English Translation & Interpreting

  • Objectives This interdisciplinary course combines the theoretical, technological and practical training necessary for effective translation between English and Chinese. It also offers training and practice in bi-lateral interpreting between the two languages. In addition to core modules in translation and interpreting, you will also take modules in advanced English or Chinese Language. You can also choose from a number of optional modules that allow you to acquire or develop your knowledge of a language other than Chinese or English. You can also progress your existing expertise for technical translation purposes or acquire knowledge in a different area (eg. management).

    -Modules in English Language offer preparation for the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English or the Cambridge Advanced Certificate of English.
    -This course is designed for native speakers of Chinese who have a high level of competence in English and wish to develop this further. The MA is also open to native speakers of English who have a high level of competence in Chinese.
    -The course is taught between the School of Modern Languages, School of Contemporary Chinese Studies and Centre for English Language Education, thereby drawing on the individual strengths and expertise available within each school.
    -You have the opportunity to complete a targeted translation project in the summer in your preferred area of translation.

    Course Content

    The course is structured around core modules in translation theory and practice; the use of technical translating tools; training and practice in bi-lateral interpreting; and advanced English or Chinese skills as appropriate to your native language.

    You will also be able to choose from optional modules that allow you to study a third language or develop your existing expertise for technical translation purposes.

    Course Structure

    This course can be taken over 1 year, full-time or 2 years, part-time.

    The full-time course is taught from the end of September to the following June. You will then spend another three months preparing your dissertation or a targeted translation project with commentary for submission by the end of September. If the appropriate arrangements can be made, your project may be a practical exercise undertaken during a placement with a local public body or charity.

    While you will receive generic training in the theory and practice of translating and interpreting, this course is dedicated to translation and interpreting between the specific languages and cultures of English and Chinese. You will therefore be able to target specific theoretical, technical and practical issues relating to this particular culture interface.

    You also have the option to complete a Postgraduate Diploma over nine months, full-time (semesters one and two) or a Postgraduate Certificate over 18 weeks, full-time (semester one).
