MSc Biotechnology and Molecular Biology

  • Objectives The aim of this programme is to upgrade knowledge and skills and increase understanding of a broad area of modern biotechnology and molecular biology. By the end of the programme students are familiar with most of the laboratory and communication skills and the theoretical background needed for future industrial and academic research work.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements:An honours degree (or an equivalent qualification) with appropriate experience, or a degree level professional qualification whose subject matter includes general biology, basic organic chemistry or elementary biochemistry, or both. An English Language score of IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 550 is required of international students for whom English is not their first language.

  • Course description COURSE CONTENT

    There are six taught modules spread over two 15- week semesters. At the end of the taught element, you attain the level of postgraduate diploma. Successful completion of the diploma stage allows progression to the MSc stage of the degree: a research project and a thesis in the third semester.

    Semester 1

    -Advanced Skills in the Biosciences
    -Advanced Molecular Biology and the Regulation of Gene Expression

    Semester 2

    Microbial Biotechnology

    Semester 3

    -Laboratory research project on a topic chosen from a list (to be provided).

    OPTIONAL MODULES

    Semester 1 – a choice of one module from

    -Advanced Molecular Parasitology
    -Advanced Molecular Microbiology

    Semester 2 – a choice of two modules from

    -Advanced Infection Control
    -Advanced Applications of Biomedical Science to the Treatment of Disease
    -Advanced reviews in Biosciences

    ASSESSMENT
    Assessment consists of short reports, written examinations, continual assessment, practical assessments, an extended written report and oral presentation on the research project.

    SPECIAL FEATURES
    The department’s facilities include a range of instrumentation, up-to-date equipment to carry out genome analysis and cellular processes and a network of computers with access to the internet and online information services.

    Microscopy facilities are widely available.

    Some research projects may be undertaken in a clinical environment.

    International students may be eligible for a faculty International Science Scholarship on application.
