MSc Applied Neuropsychology

  • Objectives The MSc in Applied Neuropsychology considers the impact of brain damage on psychological functions and evaluates methods of assessment and intervention. It will be of value to those interested in carrying out research into neuropsychological disability and rehabilitation, or as a preparation for clinical training. The course starts with foundation knowledge in neuroscience and moves on to consider impairment, assessment and intervention in different areas of psychological function such as memory, language and attention. Techniques of assessment and topical issues in clinical practice are also included. Many of the modules are shared with the MSc in Clinical Neuropsychology and there is a strong emphasis on clinical application throughout.

    -The MSc in Applied Neuropsychology course has been developed for those who do not meet the requirements to become Practitioner Full Members of the Division of Neuropsychology of the BPS but who have qualifications and experience in the area.
    -Teaching within the Institute is informed by current research. We believe that research and teaching should be developed and delivered to help students and staff make a difference in the real world.
    -In the latest Research Assessment Exercise, the Institute was awarded a 5 (with Nottingham University Business School).
    -The wider School of Psychology was awarded 24/24 in the latest Teaching Quality Assessment, with a commendation for teaching.

    Course Content

    You will be required to study a number of core modules:

    -Foundations of Neuropsychology
    -Core Research Methods
    -Health and Clinical Research Methods
    -Attention, Perception and Language
    -Memory and Executive Function
    -Cognitive Assessment
    -Cognitive Rehabilitation

    In addition, you will choose from a number of approved optional modules, giving you the flexibility to tailor the course to your personal interests and feed into your research project. Optional modules on offer may include:

    -Clinical Skills
    -Health Across the Lifespan
    -Healthcare Contexts
    -Literature Review
    -Motor Function
    -Stroke
    -Theories in Health Psychology
    -Topics in Clinical Neuropsychology

    Over the summer period towards the end of the course, you will undertake a research project. This is your opportunity to complete a major piece of independent research under the supervision of a suitably experienced member of academic staff.

    Course Structure

    The MSc in Applied Neuropsychology is delivered on a part-time basis over two years.

    The course comprises 180 credits, split across 120 credits’ worth of core and optional taught modules and a 60 credit research project.

    As this course is taught on a part-time basis, attendance is usually timetabled on specific days of the week to enable you to fit your studies around your other commitments. Part-time students can access a wide range of teaching and learning facilities remotely via the student portal.

    We also offer a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Neuropsychology, which mirrors the taught component of the MSc but does not have a research project/dissertation requirement.
