Msc Advanced Studies in Midwifery

  • Entry requirements ENTRY REQUIREMENTS * Applicants should be registered, practising midwives with a minimum of one year of clinical experience. Applicants should be registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council in the UK or other relevant regulatory body if overseas/ European Union. Prior Learning and Prior Experiential Learning: (APL/APEL) also considered for entry.

  • Course description The focus of the programme is on promoting excellence in caring and in partnership with women. Midwives will be encouraged to use their practice expertise to enhance skills in clinical judgement and decision-making in new areas such as genetics in antenatal and neonatal screening; dealing with prospective trends in practice; and new client groups with specific needs.

    The flexible online mode of delivery enables students to study at a time and place to suit their own commitments, using electronic learning materials and virtual student support mechanisms. One-to-one personalised and student group support is also provided by face-to-face tutorials (if appropriate) or across the internet via the E-POP system (webcam).

    Specific coaching in research design and processes is provided for the dissertation stage of the programme. Students may elect to exit with a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Studies in Midwifery after completing 3 modules (60 credits); a Postgraduate Diploma after completing 6 modules (120 credits); or the full Masters award (completing 6 modules and dissertation, 180 credits).

    Each student uses a Personal Development Profile (PDP) on the programme, to create an individual pathway relevant to clinical work and continuing professional development plans from the module array.

    Mainly online delivery

    Nursing and Midwifery Council approved modules (ie Preparation of Supervisor of Midwives Programme and Midwife Prescribing Programme) have some class sessions at Paisley or Hamilton campuses.

    *Denotes UK Nursing and Midwifery Council-approved programmes with specific entry requirements which must be met.

    Career Prospects

    Undertaking this programme prepares midwives to take on senior and clinical leadership roles in practice, management, and research and career development towards midwifery education. It also allows students to compare midwifery practice in the west of Scotland within their own locality.
