MSc Advanced Clinical Practice

  • Objectives The course provides an educational structure that supports the new NHS Career Framework. The course is taught within the School of Nursing, which is the largest such School in the UK. All of our five Education Centres are located in key hospitals, ensuring a direct link with professional practice. In the last independent assessment of our teaching conducted by the Quality Assurance Agency, we achieved 22 out of a total of 24 points. Our aim is to become a centre of national and international excellence in nursing research, education and practice development.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements: Applicants for the MSc/PG Dip in Advanced Clinical Practice and PG Cert in Advanced Clinical Skills will usually hold a Bachelor’s degree, or qualifications and experience deemed to be equivalent. Other requirements: All applicants must be qualified health care professionals. Students applying for the MSc and PG Dip will usually have a minimum of five year’s experience in professional practice. Students applying for the PG Cert on a stand-alone basis will usually have a minimum of two year’s professional practice. MSc and PG Dip applicants will usually join the course with the written agreement of their employer. In negotiation with course leader, applicants must identify an appropriately qualified clinical supervisor before commencing the course.

    Duration: 2 years part-time

    In recent years there have been major shifts in professional boundaries within the health service. Increasingly nurses and other registered practitioners are taking on roles that have traditionally been the domain of doctors. The MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice aims to provide these practitioners with the appropriate knowledge and skills to manage complex cases within their own speciality. This course provides an educational structure that links to relevant competency frameworks and supports the NHS Career Framework.

    The course is patient centred and incorporates both the psychosocial and physical aspects of health and disease. Students are expected to develop reflective and evidence-based practice and rigorous assessments ensure high standards of professional and clinical competence.

    Students should have at least five years' postgraduation experience of which three must be in their chosen speciality. They must be able to demonstrate an ability to study at degree level. Students must have the support of their clinical area and a nominated supervisor/mentor
