MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (Active Implantable Device Technology Management)

  • Objectives You'll develop your knowledge and skills relating to the function and technology of active implantable devices as well as the requirements of a monitoring and management service.
  • Entry requirements Applicants should have an honours degree (2.2 classification or above) in a science subject, some relevant clinical experience is also required. Applicants with other relevant experience will be considered.
  • Academic title MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (Active Implantable Device Technology Management)
  • Course description MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (Active Implantable Device Technology Management)

This course is a collaborative venture between the University of Teesside and Heart Rhythm UK. It is designed for science graduates and healthcare professionals who wish to develop advanced skills in the management of patients with active implantable medical devices.

This course includes the following modules:

    Active Implantable Device Service Development
In this module you examine the functioning of an implantable device service within a broader healthcare context. You will study the structure, function and economics of healthcare systems along with approaches to managing quality and modernisation.

    Active Implantable Device Therapy
This module looks at the scientific, clinical and more general aspects of professional practice. You will use various scenarios to explore ethical consent and the scope of practice issues. You will also do a six day placement in an approved centre to gain experience of a specialist unit.

Clinical Application of Active Implantable Device Science & Technology
This module addresses the pathophysiology applied to Active Implantable Devices. You will examine the relevant body systems, their function and the pathology related to device outputs. You will develop skills in solving problems and making clinical decisions based on these outputs.

    Designing Research Projects
This module will provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills to design and manage relevant quantitative and qualitative research projects.

    Dissertation
This module enables you to complete an independent research project. You can discuss areas of interest with an allocated supervisor.

    Evidence-based Practice
The evidence-based practice module develops skills in studying at master’s level, enabling you to make the transition to postgraduate study. It also introduces you to the key concept of evidence-based practice within a health and social care setting. Throughout the module you will develop practical skills in searching literature, critically evaluating and managing change. You will be able to focus these skills to your own specialist area of practice within the assignment.

    Implantable Device Science & Technology
This module focuses on electronic, microchip and software design related to the function of active implantable devices. It forms the basis for examining programming and managing data in the context of therapeutic systems goals.

    Course structure
Core modules focus on evidence-based practice and research. Specialist modules address the science and technology of the devices and relevant physiology and pathology. You'll also cover the therapeutic role of these devices and the management of a monitoring service. The programme is delivered entirely online except for a one-day induction at the University and six days' attendance at a specialist clinical centre.

    Careers
As a science graduate you'll become a healthcare scientist able to take responsibility for monitoring and managing patients with active implantable devices (cardiac devices initially).
