-The programme provides a route from undergraduate level to MPhil/PhD
-It is particularly suited for students who have restrictions on the time they are available to be on campus due to distance or other commitments

    Duration
1 year full time or 2 years part time

    General programme structure

This MRes programme provides an exciting opportunity for textual, theoretical and (if appropriate and feasible) creative/practical study. It also provides high-quality preparation for doctoral research through a focused and manageable project that you define.

    The programme includes:

-the theoretical and conceptual location of a specific project within the interdisciplinary field of Theatre and Performance
-a theoretical and conceptual grounding in approaches to postgraduate research in the arts and humanities in general
-practical training in appropriate research skills (e.g. in the definition of a project and appropriate methodologies; the identification and analysis of textual, visual and oral sources; the application of new technologies; the location of research material in relevant libraries and archives; ways of designing a project methodology, etc.)

You can expect to receive a grounding in the current debates about, approaches to, and theories, skills and methodologies for performance research. Your thesis may be assessed entirely through written work or through written work and a substantial practical project that addresses particular research questions.

    Detailed programme structure

All students complete the following modules in either 12 months (full time) or 24 months (part time):

    -Researching performance
-Research in the arts and humanities
-Masters thesis in the Faculty of Arts (leading to either a practice-led or written text-only submission)

Students attend individual tutorials with their supervisors as well as regular research seminar presentations with theatre and performance staff and other postgraduate students.

You will work in an environment that constantly questions the boundaries and definitions of what ‘theatre’ is and can be. You will have the opportunity to engage in Plymouth’s very healthy theatre scene (which includes innovative programming at the Plymouth Theatre Royal and Barbican Theatre) as well as the programme of events and workshops arranged by the department itself.
