Exercise and lifestyle are vital health issues today. The principal aim of this programme is to equip you with the skills required to pursue a career in exercise science. The programme focuses on effects of exercise, diet and lifestyle on human physiology. It includes the whole span of physiology from cellular-molecular to population surveys. You will be introduced to contemporary experimental approaches and techniques and may apply them in individual research projects.
Content
The programme consists of two taught courses chosen from a wide selection (see below), and one 20-week project (for the PgDip) or two projects (for the MRes).
You must take two taught courses from an extensive list of choices (only one course may be taken from within each group). Courses available include:
* (Group A) Exercise in cardiac disease; Muscle and exercise
* (Group B) Exercise in extreme environments; Exercise in medical conditions; Respiration
* (Group C) Cardiovascular science; Physical activity, fitness and metabolic health; Training, overtraining and drugs in sport
* (Group D) Bioethics; Cardiovascular pharmacology; Factors affecting physical performance; Physical activity and public health.
For example, if you are interested in the purely physiological aspects of exercise you might take Muscle and exercise, and Cardiovascular science. Or if you are more interested in sport you might choose Training, overtraining and drugs in sport, and Physical activity and public health. Choice of taught courses may also be influenced by the scheduling of project work. However the programme offers the flexibility for you, with advice, to choose a programme suited to your particular interests.
