MRes Biomedical Sciences

  • Objectives The main aim of this programme is to offer research training for those students intending to proceed to PhD and is largely based on individual research projects, rather than coursework.
  • Academic title MRes Biomedical Sciences
  • Course description MRes: 12 months full-time; up to 36 months part-time
    PgDip: 9 months full-time
    Content

     You will undertake two 20-week projects (one project only for the PgDip), as well as some advanced theoretical material. Projects are offered by staff in all divisions of the faculty and the Faculties of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, as well as other local institutes such as the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, the Hannah Research Institute and some departments of the University of Strathclyde.

    Although intended primarily for those aiming at a higher degree, the programme will give an excellent training to those wishing to enter the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. The programme also serves as an excellent introduction for overseas students who may wish to proceed to PhD studies in the UK.
    Specialisation is offered within the overall programme title of MRes in Biomedical Sciences, so you may concentrate on one area of study and graduate with the specific degree title of, for example, MRes in Biomedical Sciences (Infection & Immunity).

    Possible specialisations are:

        * Anatomy
        * Biotechnology (new from 2007)
        * Cell Engineering
        * Exercise Science
        * Integrative Mammalian Biology (new from 2007)
        * Infection & Immunity
        * Medical Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
        * Molecular Genetics
        * Neuroscience
        * Proteomics
        * Post Genomic Technologies.

    Three Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council studentships are available to eligible candidates specifically for the specialisation in Integrative Mammalian Biology.  Candidates may be either science or veterinary graduates and must qualify as eligible for UK research council studentships.

    Specialist postgraduate diplomas may also be taken, comprising the taught components and first project only.
