ObjectivesThis programme provides training in a wide range of modern molecular biology techniques for students who hope to pursue a research career in biotechnology. You will gain valuable practical research experience by using the skills and techniques acquired during the year to complete two extensive (20-week) research projects.
Entry requirementsEntry requirements A second class Honours degree or equivalent (eg GPA of 3.0 or above) in a biological science or related subject.
The programme consists of one taught course – Advanced studies for MRes – which includes lecture and seminar-based teaching on current molecular biology and biotechnology. This course also contains lecture and practical sessions on molecular methods.
You will participate in the graduate school’s research skills training programme which includes sessions on:
• Experimental design
• Library skills (literature searching & review)
• Presentation skills
• Scientific writing
• Statistics
• Radiation protection
• Research ethics
• Laboratory safety
• IT skills.
The 20-week research projects are the main focus of the programme, they give real experience of cutting-edge research and allow significant scientific progress to be made. Project titles are chosen to reflect students’ interests and the skills that they wish to acquire. At the end of each project, students produce a scientific report and present their findings to the class.
UK and EU students will have the possibility of doing one of their projects in another European university under the ERASMUS LLP exchange scheme.
