Objectives
This masters programme provides an opportunity for full- and part-time postgraduate study in the field of Art History, a leading research area within the university. It supports the planning and completion of an independent research project to masters level, but also provides a thorough training in preparation for a career in Art History and/or for an MPhil/PhD.

Entry requirements
Entry requirements Normally a 2:1 or above BA (Hons) degree in Art History or a related subject; or an equivalent degree from overseas. Evidence that you are ready to pursue your proposed project. IELTS of 7.0 or equivalent.

Course description
General programme structure
MRes Art History can be taken either full time over 12 months (October to September) or part time over 24 months. The programme comprises three assessed modules:
-Research methods in art history (30 credits)
-Research in the arts and humanities (30 credits)
-A masters thesis or approved research project (120 credits)
Full-time students take the research methods in art history module in term one, the research in the arts and humanities module in terms one and two, and their thesis across the whole academic year. Part-time students take the two taught modules in year one and carry out their thesis in year two. The thesis is taught via one-to-one supervision during term time and through agreed provision up to final submission in September. Students are also encouraged to attend seminar groups in a variety of humanities disciplines, and the faculty-wide postgraduate training courses open to all.

Detailed programme structure
We will help you to ground your chosen project in the latest theoretical and conceptual approaches in Art History and beyond. This programme explicitly embeds training in the skills identified by the Joint Research Councils, and the Arts and Humanities Research Council in particular, to prepare graduates for MPhil/PhD programmes.
All students are expected to attend the regular Art History research seminar series for staff and postgraduates.
MRes Art History students complete the following:
-Research methods in art history (30 credits): practical training in appropriate research skills in Art History (eg in the identification and analysis of textual, visual and oral sources; the location of research material in relevant libraries and archives; ways of designing a project methodology)
-Research in the arts and humanities (30 credits): a theoretical and conceptual grounding in approaches to postgraduate research in the Arts and Humanities in general
-A masters thesis, or approved research project (120 credits): a specific theoretical and/or historical research project located within the study of the visual arts, museum studies or cognate disciplines embracing aspects of visual culture
