MRes Art and Technology

  • Objectives This programme provides a rich opportunity to practically and critically engage with ‘transdisciplinary practice’ across the intertwining fields of Art and Technology. It aims to develop skills and understandings necessary to pursue individual practice and/or to prepare for an MPhil/PhD.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Normally a 2:1 or above Hons degree in a relevant subject (from Art, Design, media and creative technologies). Evidence that you are ready to pursue the project you propose in your application. IELTS of 6.5 or equivalent.

  • Course description General programme structure

    MRes Art and Technology provides a rich opportunity for students from a broad range of backgrounds to practically and critically engage with "transdisciplinary practice". The programme, which incorporates a flexible online learning resource, is delivered jointly by the Faculty of Arts and i-DAT (Institute of Digital Art and Technology, www.i-dat.org) a subject group in the Faculty of Technology.

    i-DAT is a creative playground for transdisciplinary practice at the interface between art, technology and science and provides a rich world-class research environment through its relationships with AZTEC (Art Science Technology) Research Consortium, which includes the Centre for Computer Music Research, the Planetary Collegium and the Nascent Art & Technology, Transtechnology and Art and Social Technologies research groups. From within this unique context, but from the perspective provided by the Research in the arts and humanities and the masters thesis in the Faculty of Arts" modules, students can develop new insights into the opportunities offered by transdisiplinary practices.

    Modules:

    Invisible architecture

    -Generative media
    -Research in arts and humanities
    -Masters thesis (leading to a practice-led or written submission).

    Modules engage with:

    -investigations exploring new "architectures", "augmented" environments and generative "eartefacts" that challenge established cultural forms
    -online lectures, studio workshops and seminars
    -a theoretical and conceptual grounding in approaches to research
    -practical training to locate your practice within the field of study
