Modern French Studies (MA)

  • Objectives Taught in French and English, this degree offers you the chance to reach a broad understanding of modern French culture through the study of key themes, issues and developments in French literature and criticism, film, and contemporary history. By promoting an in-depth understanding of the scope of modern French studies, the degree will equip you with the skills, methods and perspectives required for independent research. This degree is ideal if you have a professional interest in France or would simply like a deeper knowledge of modern French culture and society. It is also a very good stepping stone to doctoral research.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Good degree or equivalent (e.g. in French single or joint honours, French studies). If obtained in a French-speaking university, a degree in any arts or social science discipline. Native or near-native competence in French and English.
  • Academic title Modern French Studies (MA)
  • Course description Core course: Approaches to French Studies. This module is organised around a theme, approached from a number of different perspectives, and which typically changes from year to year.

    Four options from a list, which may include:

    -Histoires du Cinéma
    -Colonialisme Français et Décolonisation
    -Sex and Sexualities in Modern French Literature and Film
    -The French Fantastic in Literature and Cinema
    -Evil in Nineteenth-Century French Thought and Literature.

    Further options may be chosen from some other MA programmes, including:

    -MA European Cultures
    -MA Theory and Practice of Translation
    -MA Applied Linguistics

    Dissertation in French or English, prepared through a dissertation workshop and a research skills module.

    Teaching
    Seminars and small-group teaching.

    Assessment
    Core course assessed on the basis of two coursework essays. Assessed work for each option consists of a research essay. Dissertation of 15,000 words with a short viva voce examination.

    You must complete at least one major assignment (an option research essay or the dissertation) in French and at least one in English.

    When to apply

    -Interviews are held throughout the academic year.
