Modern Foreign Languages in the Primary Classroom PgCert-PgDip-MA
ObjectivesInitially offered as a part-time postgraduate certificate programme, you now have the opportunity to continue your studies with the postgraduate diploma and MA programmes. This will enable you to carry out personal research and development activities in schools. If you have successfully completed the Training and Development Agency’s 30-hour CPD course ‘Teaching French in the Primary School’, you may apply for exemption from part of Phase 1 of the programme.
Entry requirementsA key component of the National Languages Strategy is the introduction of a modern foreign language in all primary schools by 2010. If you are a non-specialist primary school teacher involved in the introduction of French lessons into your school, this course is ideal.

Course descriptionWhat will you study?
You will explore how to teach modern foreign languages to different types of learners and how to record and assess your students’ work. You will learn various teaching techniques, such as using songs, rhymes and poems and games. You will cover questioning techniques and the use of ICT when teaching modern foreign languages. In addition you will learn how to present and practise vocabulary, and how to teach grammar effectively.
