MML Chinese and Japanese (4 Years)

  • Entry requirements Selected entry requirements English language: Candidates must be proficient in the English language, which is the language of instruction and examination at the university. Acceptable English Language qualifications include IELTS 6.5, CPE grade C, CAE Grade B or another equivalent A level: Grades AAB (including Chinese and Japanese). AS level: Two AS-Levels may be accepted in place of the third A-Level. Unit grade information: The University of Manchester welcomes the provision of unit grade information which, like all other available information, will inform the consideration of applications. Unit grades will not normally form part of offer conditions, except for Mathematics programmes. GCSE: Minimum grade C in English Language. Key Skills qualification: The University warmly welcomes applications from students studying the Key Skills qualification. However, as the opportunities to take these modules are not open to all applicants, currently this is not an essential requirement of the University.     -MML is for academically ambitious students who wish to maximise the depth and breadth of their expertise in two language areas, and to develop their research skills beyond undergraduate level.
    -The first two years are identical to the BA, but are followed by two years of highly specialised study (the equivalent of the final year at BA). These two years include Masters level training in research methods and theoretical methodologies.
    -Students complete two Masters level dissertations, one in each language.
    The programme involves four years of study in Manchester, with a range of options on the period of time spent abroad (minimum of 8 weeks in each country) representing a unique opportunity to make the most of your Modern Languages degree.

    Special features
    The distinctive features of the MML courses are

    -the opportunity to take Master's level courses in the third and fourth years of the programme thereby enhancing academic development
    -pursue a greater level of independent research
    -concentrate on one language in turn on the third and fourth years of study
    -range of options for the period of residence abroad (from 8 weeks in each country up to 1 year in each country)

    Course content for year 1
    Your first year will introduce you to a range of disciplines and your time will be split equally across your subjects with 60 credits being studied in each language.  As well as studying content courses in areas such as literature, history, society and culture, you will be trained in the modern spoken and written language through a compulsory core language course.

    Course content for year 2
    As you move into your second year you will again spend you time split equally between both of your languages.  The core language course is organised along the lines of the first-year course, though at a more advanced level, while the optional course units available in your second year are more numerous and specialised than before. 

    At the end of your second year you will begin your first period of residence abroad in a country where your first language of study is spoken.  For further information please see residence abroad

    Course content for year 3
    On your return to Manchester following your first period of residence abroad you will focus mainly on your first language of study.
     
    Your core language course will continue along the same lines as year one and two but at a more advanced level with a 20 credit compulsory module.
    A further 40 credits will be taken from optional, cultural content modules in the subject area of your first language of study.

    You will enhance your studies with a 20 credit Masters level module in research methods which will underpin your 20 credit Masters level dissertation.

    Your final 20 credits will be taken from a range of options in your second language of study.

    At the end of this year you will undertake your second period of residence abroad in a country where your second language of study is spoken.

    Course content for year 4
    On your return from your second period of residence abroad you will enter your final year of study at Manchester.  This year will be spent entirely on your second language of study.

    As in year 3 your core language course will continue along the same lines as year one and two but at a more advanced level with a 20 credit compulsory module.

    A further 40 credits will be taken from optional, cultural content modules in the subject area of your first language of study

    You masters level study will comprise a 30 credit module exploring critical theory and a 30 credit dissertation on your second language of study.

    Course content for year 5
    If you choose to undertake an 8 week period of residence abroad in each country you will complete this degree in 4 years.

    Alternatively you can choose to spend 32 weeks abroad for one or both of your languages extending this degree programme to 5 or 6 years.

    Course fees: Tuition fees for Home/EU students commencing their studies in 2009 will be approximately £3250 per year. These fees will be subject to change in the light of government announcements to all universities.
