Content
In the first term you will study crucial theoretical debates about warfare, from medieval to modern times, through a series of team-taught core courses. This will enable you to familiarise yourself with some of the major thinkers and historians who have written on military affairs.
Core courses may include:
* Clausewitz and European military thought
* Moltke and German strategy before the First World War
* Deep battle theory and Soviet strategy
* Callwell and Britain's small wars.
Plus three optional courses, which will allow you to examine specific subjects in more detail. The options may include:
* Early modern warfare
* Chivalry and medieval warfare
* Germany and the First World War
* Grand strategy in the Second World War
* The American way of warfare.
* British defence policy since 1945.
Finally, you will write a dissertation of 15,000 words. Under the close supervision of a staff member you will carry out primary source-based research in your area of interest and develop your writing and researching skills.
