MLitt Scottish Studies

  • Objectives This programme provides you with opportunities to explore interdisciplinary themes in modern Scottish studies between 1603 and the present. The primary aim is to break down barriers between history and literature in order to understand both the culture of Scottish politics and the politics of Scottish culture. Teaching is conducted in seminars and in individual tutorials with acknowledged experts in the field of modern Scottish history and literature.

        * Issues, ideologies and institutions of modern Scotland
        * Core structures of Scottish culture.

    Specialist options include:

        * Culture and identity in the age of Ossian, Burns and Scott
        * Race, nationhood and ethnicity
        * Culture, politics and society in the Highland Clearances
        * Covenant, country, or king? Scottish political culture in the age of Union.

    All students taking the MLitt complete a dissertation on their chosen research topic under the supervision of a member of staff with an interest in their chosen field.
