Entry requirements
Identifying the right personal qualities is crucial when selecting our students. You must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to display flexibility and autonomy. You must be able to demonstrate an understanding of midwifery and it is an advantage if you have gained some previous experience within a caring role. Typical Offers A/AS level: 220 UCAS points, 140 of which must be gained at full A-level. We accept a range of alternative/equivalent qualifications including Access to Midwifery/ Health Science achieving, 63 credits at level 3 and Advanced GNVQ in Health and Social Care. Comparable overseas qualifications are acceptable, subject to verification. Applicants who meet the entry requirements are invited to a selection day. Activities will include group discussions, numeracy and English writing tests. You will be required to receive occupational health and Criminal Records Bureau clearance before the course begins. References are also required, one of which should be an academic reference. English language requirements Minimum requirements are: * IELTS: 7.0 * TOEFL: 100 internet-based total * GCSE: English language grade C

Course description
What could be more exhilarating than supporting a woman as a new baby is born? Today midwives take the lead professional role in over 75 per cent of UK births. Yet there is much more to midwifery than delivery wards. Midwives provide support to women, babies, partners and families from conception through to the first phase of post-natal care. They play a pivotal role in promoting and maintaining health, facilitating normal childbirth and seeking to enable women to make informed choices about their care.
The midwifery course at the School of Community and Health Sciences will prepare you for a rewarding career as a midwife.+
Course content
Year 1
In the first year the theme is introduction and adjustment into being a midwife as a health professional. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills, professional knowledge and attitude to working in partnership with women and the different multidisciplinary teams to give appropriate care.
You will be introduced to the basic principles of midwifery care, including promoting normal child birth. You will study eight core modules, including:
* Orientation to nursing and midwifery courses
* Foundations of personal and academic development
* Building professional knowledge
* Health and society
* Fundamental aspects of care: an introduction
* Fundamental aspects of care: developing knowledge and skills
* Essentials of applied human biology
* Introduction to the delivery of professional care (practice)
Year 2
The theme in the second year is: Developing an identity as a midwife and health professional. You will explore wider issues such as women’s health and the public health role of the midwife. You will be able to recognise the value and importance of working within a multi-professional team to ensure the best possible outcome for women and babies when complexities arise.
You will study seven core modules:
* Research and evidence based practice
* Progressing professional knowledge
* The experience of health and illness
* Partnerships with women and public health
* Excellence in midwifery
* Applied human biology in relation to complexities in childbearing
* Developing an identity as a professional midwife (practice)
Year 3
The theme in the third year is developing professional autonomy. You will be facilitated to become competent in caring for women who choose to have midwifery-led care, including home birth as a mode of delivery. This will enable you to develop autonomy and accountability as a midwife.
You will study seven core modules:
* Using evidence as a basis for practice
* Consolidating professional knowledge
* Ethics and law
* Managing care and promoting health gain
* Developing professional autonomy and leadership
* Applied human biology in midwifery
* Working as a midwife
Teaching and assessment
City University London has enhanced facilities that provide one of the most high-tech clinical and communications skills suites in the UK. The Midwifery BSc combines traditional classroom techniques and lectures with innovative approaches such as role-play, debates, skills workshops and self-directed learning. Other methods include demonstrations, tutorials and seminars – all supported by a diverse range of clinical placements in east London where you are able to practise and apply what you have learned.
Each module is assessed using a range of methods including written assignments, simulations, examination, practice-based assessments and skills assessments. You will undertake a literature-based study of 6,000 words on a subject related to midwifery in your final year.
